Thunderbird configuration instructions for Windows

These instructions are for Windows operating systems.

You must first activate your UTORid. If you have not, you can find out how to do this from the article UTORid activation.

Make sure you have the following information before you begin:

• Your UTORid and password
• Your UTORmail configuration number
• Your UTORmail incomming server address
• Your UTORmail SMTP server address

If you do not have this information or are unsure, instructions on doing so are in the article UTORmail server settings.

1. After you have downloaded the Thunderbird installation file from Mozilla and are ready to install it, double click on the downloaded file.
2. When you start Thunderbird for the first time, you will be asked if you would like to import settings from another email application. We suggest you to select Don't import anything option and click Next
3. Thunderbird will open and a New Account Setup window. Choose Email Account. Click Next
4. In the Identity window, type in your name and email address in the appropriate fields. Click Next
5. In the Server Information window, choose IMAP . Your incoming server is mailboxNN.utcc.utoronto.ca where NN is your configuration number, you can look up exactly what it is at https://www.utorid.utoronto.ca/cgi-bin/utorid/info.pl. In the Outgoing Server field, type smtp.utoronto.ca.  Click Next.
6. In the User Names window, type your UTORid in the fields for Incoming User Name and Outgoing User Name. Click Next.
7. In the Account Name window, type a name for your account e.g. UTORmail or you UTORmail accounrt. Click Next
8. In the final window, confirm all your settings and click Finish. Thunderbird will start and ask you for your password. So you should be connected to the internet.
9. Thunderbird may now ask you if you would like it to be your default email application. Select the appropriate response
10. Now we need to configure Thunderbird to use Enhanced Security Network Access which means it will use SSL. This helps to protect your email by using encryption.
11. Select Account Settings from the Tools menu
12. In the Account Settings window, under your UTORmail entry, click on Server Settings. If you do not see Server Settings, click on the plus sign next to the UTORmail entry.
13. On the right side of the Account Settings window, you should see the Server Settings
14. Make sure you have the following values:
    
    Port: 993
    User Name: Your actual UTORid
    Under Security Settings there should only be a dot beside SSL and a blank box beside Use secure Authentication
    
    
15. Locate and click on Outgoing Server (SMTP)
16. On the right side, under Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings, click on the Edit button.
17. This will pop up the SMTP Server window.
18. Make sure you have the following values:
    Server Name: smtp.utoronto.ca
    Port: 587
    Click on the box next to Use name and password so the it has a check mark and for User Name use your actual UTORid
    For Use secure connection select TLS
    Click OK
    
    
19. Click OK in the Account Settings window to finish.
